We show how to quickly make a jig to mortise door hinges. We use our mortise template to cut a jig on the bandsaw, but you can use a handsaw with equally effective results.
This method could be quicker than using chisels, even for pros!. And once you've made the template there is little chance of making a mistake.

| We used Templates by numbers 'mortise template' to make a template to use with a 20mm guide bush and 10mm router cutter
| The paper template is attached to a scrap piece of melamine faced chipboard using paper glue
| We use a bandsaw to cut along the 'Mortise Jig Cutout' outline
| The bandsawing is complete. Note that the cutout towards the right was simply an entrance for the bandsaw and doesn't need to be square. Where the bandsaw cut the template outline we ensured accuracy
| A fence is attached to the fence location on the tempate. The fence will hold the template at the correct lateral position for mortising
